Verelst was a Dutch flower painter who came to London in 1669; this exquisite still life was probably painted a year or so later and shows the artist at the height of his powers. He was later persuaded to become a court portraitist.
Provenance
Probably painted for Charles II; recorded in store at Whitehall in 1688 (no 361); in the Queen's Closet at Windsor Castle in 1710 (no 102), 1720 and 1733; probably in Queen Mary's Work Closet at Hampton Court in 1819; certainly in the Queen's Gallery at Hampton Court in 1861 (no 414)
