A Seaport with Figures c. 1656
Oil on canvas | 84.8 x 130.4 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 404916
-
A group of harbour scenes have been attributed to the collaboration of Salucci for the architecture and Miel for the figures; the only dated example (Art Museum, Cincinnati) bears the date 1656. The collaboration replicates the effect of early Claude port scenes (compare RCIN 401382); in the architecture especially one sees the same picturesque blend of grand ruins abutted by humble modern dwellings.
Provenance
Certainly recorded in the Great Drawing Room at Kensington Palace in 1818 (no 288). This is possibly the 'landscape with Roman ruins and figures carrying goods' described in Kensington in 1732 (Little Closet) and 1710 (Queen's Dining Room, no 155 as Cerquozzi). This may be the same as the 'landscape with ruins, several small figures carrying goods' in the Old Gallery at Windsor Castle in 1688 (no 826). If so this was probably acquired by Charles II
