Carl Rudolph was the son of Carl Ferdinand Sohn (1805-1867); the father was known to Queen Victoria through his portrait of the Queen of Hanover (RCIN 405078); the son was employed by members of the Royal Family 1882-6.
Prince Leopold (1853–84) was the fourth and youngest son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. A scholarly child, he attended Christ Church College in Oxford. He was a haemophiliac and suffered from epilepsy. The Prince died at the age of 31 on 28 March 1884 and in June the Queen stated that she wanted several copies of the Prince's portrait, including one full length in a kilt.
