Claude Louis Hector, Duc de Villars (1653-1754) c. 1685
Oil on canvas | 129.5 x 96.8 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 404698
-
This work was acquired by George IV as a portrait of Claude Louis Hector, Duc de Villars (1653-1754). The sitter’s age places the portrait in the later 1680s, which is consistent with this hair style and moustache. It is not impossible to recognize this sitter in Rigaud's famous portrait of Villars of 1715. The style of the portrait would appear to be a rather stiff version of that of Charles Le Brun.
Provenance
Acquired by George IV in 1814 as ‘A portrait of Marshal de Villars by Mignard from the Gallery of Monaes this picture was also seized by the Police at Paris but afterwards restored half length £42’; recorded in store at Carlton House in 1816 (no 252) and 1819 (no 338)
