This panel was originally the left wing of a folding altarpiece, which would have shown scenes from the Passion of Christ on the interior panels and Saints (probably Evangelists) on the outer panels. No other panel from this altarpiece has been identified.
This scene shows the Betrayal of Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane, the moment when the apostle, Judas, leads the soldiers to Christ in order for him to be arrested. Christ, dressed in blue, raises his right hand in benediction. Judas, dressed in orange, kisses him. They are surrounded by soldiers carrying pikes, spears and torches. On the left St Peter raises his sword to strike Malchus, who carries a lantern. On the reverse of the panel is a depiction of St Matthew, dressed in white with his attribute, an angel.Provenance
One of the group of early Flemish works from the 77 paintings belonging to Prince Ludwig von Oettingen-Wallerstein (1791-1870), which were first offered to Prince Albert in 1847 as security for a loan and came into his possession by default (no 49 in Waagen’s catalogue of 1854); 25 of them were accepted by the National Gallery in 1863
