Princess Louise (1848-1939) was the sixth child of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. In 1871 she married John Campbell, Marquess of Lorne, in St George's Chapel, Windsor. Louise was the first daughter of a sovereign since 1515 to marry a commoner and Queen Victoria thought that the marriage was 'the most popular act of my reign'.
The painting is a copy of Hall's original painting of the ceremony. The quality of the copy, however, suggests that it may not have been done by Hall himself, but entrusted to a collaborator.
