Princess Maud (1869-1938) was Queen Victoria’s granddaughter. On 22 July 1896 she married Prince Charles of Denmark in the Private Chapel at Buckingham Palace. In this painting Queen Victoria clasps the bride’s hand after the marriage. The Queen recorded in her Journal: ‘After the Benediction, Maud came forward to her parents & then to me & I kissed both her & the Bridegroom’. The artist made use of photographs taken during the ceremony as well as portrait sittings from the participants. Queen Victoria gave the painting as a present to Maud’s parents, the Prince and Princess of Wales. Signed and dated: L Tuxen 1897.
