This portrait is an early copy of an original which is at Knole. Frances Cranfield married Richard Sackville, later 5th Earl of Dorset in 1637. The background is almost identical to Van Dyck’s portrait of Lady Dorset’s niece 'Anne, Countess of Clanbrassil' which is in the Frick Collection, New York.
Provenance
First recorded in the King's Presence Chamber at Windsor Castle in 1688 (no 740); hanging here until 1792, when it is recorded in the Queen's Ball Room, where it appears (barely visibly) in Pyne's illustrated Royal Residences of 1819 (922101)
