While this sitter's identity has not been satisfactorily established, it has been suggested it may be the Antwerp artist Peeter Snayers. It is apparently a poor quality copy of an original portrait by Van Dyck of c.1630. The facial features are similar to those in an engraving of Snayers by Andreas Stock. Snayers was a history and battle painter in Antwerp who also held an appointment as court painter in Brussels and was entrusted by Van Dyck to collect money on his behalf from clients.
Provenance
Probably acquired by Frederick, Prince of Wales; certainly recorded in the Passage Room at Buckingham Palace in 1790 and again (now called 'Garden Room'') in 1819 (no 751 as a portrait of 'Snellinck the Painter')
