  • Ary Pleysier (1809-79) was a self-taught painter who worked in the Hague from 1842 to 1853. He was in Amsterdam and the Hague from 1843 to 1878, and at Leeuwarden in 1855 and 1859. His work is represented at the Boymans Museum in Rotterdam, and at the Paul Tetar van Elven Museum, Delft.

    HMY Victoria and Albert I was a twin paddle steamer, the first royal yacht to be steam powered. She was launched from Pembroke Dock on 26th April 1843, and made twenty voyages. On 22nd December 1854 she was renamed 'Osborne', in readiness for the launch of HMY Victoria and Albert II on 16th January 1855. She was scrapped in 1868.

    This depicts the Royal Yacht Victoria & Albert I with Queen Victoria on board off Flushing, August 16th 1852 on the return passage to Osborne following a visit to Leopold I King of the Belgians. The yacht appears, accompanied by other paddle steamers; she is saluted by a warship, flying the flag of the Netherlands; several rowing boats in the foreground are full of people waving towards the Royal Yacht.
