Portrait of Princess Louise of Prussia, head and shoulders, facing three-quarters to the left, her head turned half to the left; wearing a low-cut white dress decorated with the Order of Louise, and a necklace of pearls; a wreath of myrtle or orange blossom in her hair This is a copy after a three-quarter-length portrait by Franz Xaver Winterhalter (1805-73) in the Pushkin Museum of Fine Art, Moscow. It is one of nine portraits by Pfüller of members of the royal family of Prussia, six of which were copied after larger paintings by Winterhalter. Princess Louise was the only daughter of the future German Emperor and sister of Crown Prince Frederick William. Princess Victoria, Queen Victoria’s eldest daughter, formed ‘an amazing friendship’ with Louise and her brother, and in 1858 she and the Prince were married (see RCIN 402475, 402513) Signed and dated: Minna Pfüller / Berlin 1858. Inscribed on the back with the names of the artist and the sitter and the date, 1858.
