Shamrock-shaped bog oak and gold box; the hinged lid shaped as three green guilloché enamel leaves with diamond borders, each mounted with a gold and enamel crown with a pearl; central plaque with GIV cipher and Irish inscription which reads 'Go mbeannughudh Dia thu' meaning 'may God bless you'. Sides mounted with ten shamrocks connected by gold rope twists. Base engraved with the Royal coat of arms.
Provenance
Presented to George IV on his state visit to Ireland in 1821. Sold by William IV to Rundell, Bridge & Co. in 1830.
According to a label kept inside the box it was presented to King Edward VII by Mr and Mrs Bischoffsheim in 1902. -
