An adaptation, probably painted for Charles I in the 1630s of Van Somer's portrait of 1617 (RCIN 405887) although without the horse, landscape background and fewer dogs. Another similar derivation is at Kinnaird Castle.
Provenance
Probably painted for Charles I; recorded in the Commonwealth sale at St James's Palace (no 12), with no indication of a buyer; recovered at the Restoration and listed in the Queen's Gallery at Hampton Court in 1666 (no 16)
