Landseer had done a chalk sketch of Islay begging in April 1839, within a month of the Queen getting him. Islay was Queen Victoria’s favourite Skye terrier. He died on 26 April 1844, having survived a bite from a cat in 1840. The Queen described him as ‘my faithful little companion of more than 5 years ... always with me, & ... a great darling’. Inscribed on the back with the names of artist and sitter and the date, 1840.
