Copied from Samuel Cooper’s unfinished miniature of c.1665 in the Royal Collection (RCIN 420085). One of the series of portraits of Ladies after Van Dyck, Lely and Samuel Cooper. By the reign of George III they were attributed to Theodore Russell (1624-88), nephew of Cornelius Johnson, but on stylistic grounds and format they are now attributed to Remigus van Leemput.
Provenance
One of a set of 'Beauties', probably painted for Charles II; 14 are recorded in the Bathing Room at Windsor Castle in 1710 (nos 192-205) and again in 1720 & 1733; the set remained at Windsor Castle throughout the 18th Century and reappeared (now only 13) in the Queen's Bedchamber in 1790 to 1819
