Formerly attributed to William Dobson, the design of this picture is based on Van Dyck’s portrait of the two Stuart brothers in the National Gallery. The sitters were two of the sons of William Cavendish, 1st Duke of Newcastle. They served under their father in the Civil War and left England with him after his defeat at Marston Moor in 1644. They soon return to England. Henry Cavendish succeeded his father in 1676 and was Gentleman of the Robes to Charles II between 1660-62.
Provenance
Possibly acquired by Frederick, Prince of Wales; recorded at Kensington Palace in the Great Drawing Room in 1790 and the Queen's Gallery in 1818 (no 270) as Hanneman (meaning probably William Hanneman)
