A view from the south of the castle of Waldleiningen, set in the wooded, hilly countryside of the Odenwald in Bavaria. Originally a small hunting castle some fifteen miles south of Amorbach, Waldleiningen was restored and much enlarged between 1828 and 1842 for Queen Victoria’s half-brother, Charles, Prince of Leiningen. This picture was probably based on a larger picture in the Leningen collection which was painted by N. Berkhout in 1863. It was given to the Queen by the Prince of Leningen at Christmas 1863.
Provenance
Given to Queen Victoria; recorded in Room no 151 on the Chamber Floor at Windsor Castle in 1878
