Christian II, Elector of Saxony (1583-1611) and his Consort, Hedwig, Princess of Denmark, Electress of Saxony (1581-1641) Dated 1627
Oil on canvas | 29.7 x 24.1 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 401386

This would appear to be one of a small set of small scale portraits of Prince Albert’s and Queen Victoria’s Saxon ancestors. Its frame resembles that of a pair of smaller portrait of the Duke of Duchess of Saxony (RCIN 404315-6), acquired by the Prince in 1840. It is also related to a set of three Saxon ancestor-portraits of similar dimensions, two of which are documented acquisitions of 1840 (400608, 401385 & 401388). Like another in this group (RCIN 400608), this would seem to be a copy of a larger painting, probably within the collection of Albert’s family, the Dukes of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.
The couple appear in full-length in an interior; Christian II holds a baton in his right hand and wears a green silk jacket and breeches; the Duchess in a grey and black silk dress holds an ostrich feather fan. Above each is an inscription in gilt letters:
Von G:G Christian der 2. / Churfürst herzog ue / Sachffen. (After G. G. Christian II, Elector Duke of Saxony)
Von G:G: hedewig geborne / aus k[?]on: stam zu Dennemark / Churfürftin und herzogin zu Sachffen. Wittwe. (After G. G. Hedwig born in [?] from Denmark, Electress and Duchess of Saxony Widow)Provenance
Probably acquired by Prince Albert, first recorded when removed from Osborne House in 1902 (label on back)
