Ernest Augustus, Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg, Elector of Hanover (1629-1698) c.1730-50
Oil on canvas | 40.95 x 33.45 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 401339
-
This is one of a set of twelve oval portraits in matching frames of members of the Hanoverian royal family (406587-90 and 401339-46), only six of which are catalogued by Oliver Millar (OM 634-9 and 1218). They would appear all to have been copied from existing portraits of the first half of the eighteenth century. The set was first recorded in Windsor Castle in the 1870s. The sitter for this portrait married Sophia, daughter of the 'Winter King' and his Queen (Elizabeth of Bohemia, daughter of James I); their son was Elector of Hanover and King George I of Great Britain. He is shown wearing parcel-gilt armour, a broad red silk sash across his chest, lace cravat with a blue bow above and a long, dark-grey curly wig. This is a posthumous portrait and the costume dates from the late seventeenth century.
