Liotard’s famous 1749 portrait of the society beauty, Maria Gunning, Countess of Coventry (Musee d’art et d’histoire, Geneva), was much reproduced in prints during the eighteenth century, usually reversing the sense of the original image (see for example NPG D34178). This painted derivation is in the same sense as the prints (from which it was probably taken) rather than the original. The sitter is shown with her chin resting on her left hand, the arm upon her left knee; wearing 'Turkish' costume of yellow covered in small flowers with gilt-metal circular buckles.
