Catherine of Braganza (1638-1705) was the daughter of John IV of Portugal who became Charles II's Queen in 1662. This three-quarter-length portrait was painted, presumably for the sitter, soon after her arrival in England. It is the original for many painted version and copies. The Queen is shown seated, facing to the left, wearing a silk dress with pearls around her neck and at her breast, and with her hands in her lap.
Provenance
Probably painted for the sitter in 1663-5; first recorded in a wardrobe in St James's Palace in 1688 (no 1191); in the Queen's Dressing Room in Windsor Castle in 1710 (no 77) and until 1778; it was moved to the King's Dressing Room at Windsor by 1792 and Old State Bedchamber by 1813, where it also appears in Pyne's illustrated Royal Residences of 1819 (RCIN 922106).
