This portrait was copied from Franz Xaver Winterhalter’s painting of the reception of Louis-Philippe (RCIN 401378). Charles Jenkinson, 3rd Earl of Liverpool (1784-1851) was the son of the 1st Earl by his second wife. He was a Page of Honour to George III and had a career in the navy, diplomatic service and the Austrian army. He was an MP from 1807-28 and a Trustee of the National Gallery 1824-51. Queen Victoria described him as ‘A dear and faithful, excellent friend’.
