-
This head and shoulders portrait was copied for Queen Victoria from Winterhalter’s picture of the reception of Louis-Philippe (see RCIN 401378). George Hamilton-Gordon was Foreign Secretary 1828-30 and 1841-6, and Prime Minister 1852-5. He was a cultivated and well-travelled man and President of the Society of Antiquaries for more than 30 years. Queen Victoria acquired the Balmoral estate in Scotland mainly through his suggestion as the lease was owned by his brother, Sir Robert Gordon. The Queen described him as ‘the kindest and wisest adviser’.
