A painter of portraits and of historical, military and sporting subjects, Thomas Jones Barker studied under his father, the painter Thomas Barker, and subsequently in Paris under Horace Vernet. Another version of this portrait, sold at Sotheby’s 8 November 1967 (142), was signed and inscribed by the artist as painted from life in Park Lane in August 1862. A variant is at Hughenden Manor (no. 138).
Provenance
Presumably acquired by, or presented to, Queen Victoria, this painting was formerly in the Ladies’ Drawing-Room at Osborne and was removed to Windsor in 1902
