Fabergé
Seated pig c. 1908
Agate, rose diamonds | 3.5 x 4.1 x 2.1 cm (whole object) | RCIN 40015

This carving was modelled as part of the Sandringham commission in 1907. The majority of the works from the commission were made of Russian hardstones, in this case agate. In order to ensure the finest raw material and the best stonecutters, Carl Fabergé established his own specialist workshop dealing purely with the remarkably rich variety of minerals mined across Russia, particularly in Siberia and the Urals. This pig demonstrates not only the acute observation of Fabergé’s sculptors but also their skill in selecting a tiny piece of agate that would match the tonal variation of the animal’s skin.
