A circular convex shield or dhal of rhinoceros hide, carved with a floral design and painted in coloured lacquers and outlined with gold. The shield is surmounted by four gilt bosses and the inner surface of the shield is lacquered in silver around the edge with a floral trail. Carved rhinoceros shields such as this example were a speciality of Gujarat in particular Ahmedabad where this shield is likely to have come from.
The Prince of Wales was unable to visit Ahmedabad during his four-mouth tour of India but instead received a deputation from the city whilst visiting Baroda (modern-day Vadodara) on 23 November. This shield may have been presented during this meeting.Provenance
Presented to King Edward VII, when Prince of Wales, during his tour of India in 1875-76.
