Provenance
This cabinet and a pair of corner cupboards (RCIN 29.1-2) originally belonged to the duchesse de Mazarin and were included in her sale; auctioned by J.-B.-P. Lebrun, 10-15 December 1781, lots 218 and 219 sold for 3720 livres and 2000 livres respectively. They later passed through the hands of the dealer Rocheux, and then appeared as a single lot in the Maëlrondt sale in Paris, 15 November 1824, lot 305; bought by Sir Charles Long on behalf of George IV for 10,000 francs and delivered to Carlton House on 14 January 1825 (Jutsham Receipts I.180). The centre panel was then decorated with a plaque of Sèvres porcelain, painted with flowers and an elaborate green border. In 1827 it was restored by Morel and Seddon when the plaque was removed and replaced with the japanned panel. The central mask was also altered at this time.
