Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher, was a Prussian field-marshal who led the Prussian forces in the Napoleonic wars, most famously alongside the Duke of Wellington at the Battle of Waterloo. The bust was commissioned in 1814 by King George IV, when Prince Regent, for the Second Room of the Armoury Attic Floor at Carlton House, which was decorated with portrait busts of British and foreign military heroes who had led successful campaigns against the French, in the Seven Years War and the Napoleonic Wars.
Marshal Blücher (1742-1819) is depicted wearing uniform decorated with the insignia of the Iron Cross of Prussia, the Black and Red Eagles of Prussia, the order of Maria Theresa, and suspended at the centre is the miniature portrait of the Prince of Wales profusely set with diamonds, which was conferred on him in the Grand Hall at Carlton House on 7th June 1814.
According to a bill in George IV account’s Turnerelli charged £150.10 for this bust.Provenance
