Carved from a boulder, the brown outer skin intermittently visible round the sides. The somewhat ovoid block set on end with its base flattened, and the sides carved to represent rocky mountain scenery, with a woman and a child with a toy and peasants with bundles on the front. The low, oval stand, of polished black wood, carved with pine branches and peaches with waves below, and supported on four small feet.
Provenance
Presented to Queen Victoria on the occasion of her Golden Jubilee in 1887 by Guangxu, emperor of China. Identifiable in a list of Golden Jubilee gifts to Queen Victoria as ‘A BLOCK OF WHITE JADE carved in parts and placed on a rosewood stand. (Intended to represent a mountain, symbolic of long life, stability, and unchangeableness)’ (Royal Archives F&V/ JUB/ 1887/ CELEBRATION).
