HRH The Prince of Wales (b. 1948)

Loch Nagar

RCIN 300100

HRH The Prince of Wales has painted in watercolour since the early 1970s, when the artist Edward Seago gave him a lesson. The Prince has also mentioned how growing up surrounded by works of art encouraged him to create his own sketches and paintings. As this selection of watercolours demonstrates, the landscape of The Queen’s Balmoral estate has served as a great source of inspiration for The Prince of Wales. The selected views are striking for their similarity to the landscapes captured by his great-great-great grandmother Queen Victoria in her sketchbooks, although his are executed on a larger scale. Two of the watercolours on display depict Lochnagar, a Munro (a mountain measuring over 3000 feet high) on the Balmoral estate. The Prince has noted that Lochnagar looks ‘different from every angle.’ For The Prince of Wales, painting and sketching is a relaxing pastime, but it is one that he is only able to practice when his busy schedule allows. Like Queen Victoria, he tends to paint when he is on holiday, and often returns to the same subjects.
