Photograph of a tableau vivant that was performed at Balmoral Castle. On the left, Princess Alexandra of Saxe Coburg and Gotha (1878-1942) dressed in white, stands with her hands outstretched towards the Hon Ethel Cadogan who plays the witch who is seated on the right whilst holding a needle and thread and broom in her other hand.
The tableau 'The Sleeping Beauty' was performed in the Ballroom at Balmoral Castle on the 8th June 1893 and was one of a series of performances that included 'Caller Herrin' (fisherwomen); 'Ivanhoe'; 'The Studio'; 'In Romania' and 'The Snake Charmer'. Following the performance of this tableau on the 8th June 1893, Queen Victoria wrote in her journal that 'Sandra [Princess Alexandra] looked very pretty, all in white, with roses in her hair, as Sleeping Beauty, & Ld William Cecil did very well as the Prince.'
