Photograph of Lord Curzon of Kedleston (1859-1925) and Lady Curzon (1870-1906) sitting in a silver howdah on the caparisoned State Elephant, named 'Lutchmann Pershad'. An attendant stands behind the howdah, holding an umbrella over the couple. A driver sits just above the elephant's face. Four attendants stand on the ground beside the elephant. The attendant on the far left holds a ladder, and the two attendants at the front hold decorative poles. Lutchmann Pershad's face is decorated with painted designs and the elephant is adorned with rich tapestries and decorative beads.
Lord Curzon, later Baron Curzon, was Viceroy and Governor-General of India from 1899 to 1905. The silver howdah depicted in the photograph was used by King Edward VII (1841-1910) on his first visit to India in 1875. -
