Carte-de-visite head and shoulders photograph of Princess Maria des Neves of Bourbon. The subject is shown in three quarter view, facing towards the left of the image. She has abundant, dark, curly hair that is arranged on top of her head in a pouf or toque style, with a ringlet falling across her left shoulder. Her hair is elaborately decorated with small, pale coloured flowers. She is wearing a pale coloured, high necked gown, trimmed with lace and pleats. Around her neck she is wearing a string of pearls and a black velvet choker, embellished with jewels.
Maria was the eldest child and daughter of exiled Miguel of Portugal and his wife Adelaide of Löwenstein-Wertheim-Rosenberg. In 1871 she married Prince Alfonso of Bourbon but the couple had no children.Provenance
