  • Carte-de-visite half length photograph of Marie Henriette, Queen of the Belgians. The subject is shown with her back to the viewer, her face in profile facing the right of the image. On the left side of the scene is a slim pillar, encircled by ivy. On the right of the scene it is possible to see part of a trellis panel. The subject's hair is arranged in a chignon, beneath a black and white headdress with ribbon embellishments. She is wearing a dark coloured gown with a velvet bodice, silk sleeves, lace collar and cuffs and gilt buttons. She is wearing jewelled drop earrings.

    Marie Henriette was the daughter of Archduke Joseph, Palatine of Hungary and Duchess Maria Dorothea of Württemberg. Her beauty led to her being known as  'The Rose of Brabant'. She was an accomplished artist, musician and horsewoman. In 1853 she married Prince Leopold of Belgium and the couple had four children.
