Although this photograph is dated 1857 in the album, a photograph with the title, 'Baptistery, Canterbury Cathedral' was exhibited at the Photographic Society exhibition in 1856, which makes a date of 1855 more probable.

This photograph appeared with three others in The Sunbeam in the spring of 1857. It was reviewed with great enthusiasm in Photographic Notes as 'a gem, perfect in execution, and of those ''choice bits'', which the true artist appears so frequently to stumble upon ... [It] is, with the exception of the two figures, picturesque in every part.'
