Photograph of a bas relief by John Gibson (1790-1866) depicting Cupid and Psyche. Cupid stands facing left. He embraces Psyche, who kneels before him. It is likely this relief depicts the moment Cupid saves Psyche.
Gibson made many sculptures focusing on the story of Cupid and Psyche. Another example of Gibson's work on the same theme is the 1841 sculpture held in Osborne House (RCIN 41062) that was commissioned by Queen Victoria in 1844.Provenance
