Photograph showing, from left to right: Queen Victoria, seated, smiling; Beatrice, Princess Henry of Battenberg, standing; Victoria, Princess Louis of Battenberg, seated, with Princess Alice of Battenberg on her lap.
Despite her great sorrow at the death of the Prince Consort, Queen Victoria never entirely lost the ability to enjoy life and her smile was by no means as rare as the scarcity of photographic evidence suggests. This photograph was one of the many taken after breakfast in the Council Room at Osborne House on 26 April 1886 that the Queen considered 'very successful'. Her youngest daughter, Beatrice, stands in the background. Victoria, Princess Louis of Battenberg, a granddaughter of Queen Victoria, holds her daughter Princess Alice of Battenberg on her knee. Princess Alice went on to marry Prince Andrew of Greece and they became the parents of HRH The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.Provenance
