Of the ten bridesmaids at the marriage of the Duke and Duchess of York (later King George V and Queen Mary), nine were granddaughters of Queen Victoria. The tenth, Princess Alice of Battenberg, was a great-granddaughter (second row, seated, far left); she was the mother of HRH Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh. All except two of the bridesmaids would marry into the ruling houses of Europe. Princess Helena of Schleswig-Holstein (back row, left of bride) never married, and ‘Patsy’, Princess Patricia of Connaught (seated, far right), renounced her royal title when she chose to marry a commoner, the naval commander Alexander Ramsay.
