Group photograph taken in a garden at Woodlands, June 1896, Standing: Lord Howe; Princess Maud of Wales; Hon. Harry Stonor; Princess Victoria of Wales; Colonel Oliphant; Marquis of Ripon; Commander Seymour Fortescue; Earl of Gosford; Jean de Reszke.
Seated: Lord Colebroke; Lord Curzon; Countess of Gosford; Miss Emilie Yznaga (sister of Consuelo, Duchess of Manchester); Alexandra, Princess of Wales; Lady Gladwys De Grey, Marchioness of Ripon; Eduoard de Reszke, holding a croquet mallet.
The royal sisters are wearing virtually identical clothes, which they enjoyed doing, before Princess Maud's marriage to Prince Charles of Denmark, later King Haakon VII of Norway. The occasion seems to have been a tea party with croquet, and of a musical flavour, with the presence of two famous Polish operatic singers and the well-known patroness of Opera, Lady De Grey.
Woodlands may be Woodlands Park, Iver in Buckinghamshire. -
