Photograph of Princess Mary (1897-1965), later Princess Royal and Countess of Harewood, in a full length portrait, seated on a stool, with her head turned to face three-quarters to the right. She holds an open fan. Signed by the sitter in the bottom right of the photograph.
Princess Mary established a Christmas Gift Fund to help deliver a Christmas present to those fighting during the First World War. Servicemen on land or sea, would each receive a brass box containing tobacco or sweets, writing equipment and this portrait of Princess Mary as a 'gift from the nation' on Christmas Day 1914. With the help of public funds, over 400,000 of these boxes were delivered to service personnel in time for Christmas 1914. More were distributed over the course of the war. -
