Photograph of, on the left, a jasperware oviform, or egg-shaped, vase on square plinth and a jaspenware coffee pot and cover. The vase has two handles. There are depiction of the Muses around the vase. The three complete muses on the visible side of the vase are, from left to right, Urania (Astronomy), Clio (History) and Thalia (Comedy). The coffee pot is decorated with interlinking flora designs and scrollwork.
The jasperware objects were created by Josiah Wedgewood (1730-95). Jasperware was developed by Wedgewood and refers to a type of matte, unglazed stoneware. Both objects appear to now be held by the Victoria and Albert Museum (museum numbers 3472&A-1855 and 1421-1855).Provenance
Commissioned by Henry Cole. Later acquired by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert
