Photograph of Edward, Prince of Wales, later The Duke of Windsor, in a three-quarters length photographic portrait. His hands rest on the handle of a sword. He is dressed in the military uniform, of the 35/36th Jacob's Horse, which included a striped turban and shoulder epaulettes covered with gilt curb-chains, plus several medals. In 1922 the 36th Jacob's Horse was amalgamated with the 35th Scinde Horse as the 14th Prince of Wales's Own Scinde Horse Regiment.
As the Ambassador of the British Empire, this portrait of the Prince of Wales, accompanied by the heading 'Our Greatest Ambassador' was used in film footage taken during the 1921-22 tour of India.
On October 26 1921, Edward, Prince of Wales left Portsmouth to begin a tour of the Indian Subcontinent and Japan that covered 41,000 miles, lasting 8 months. Prince Edward spent four months in India, travelling from Bombay to Calcutta and then from Madras to Karachi. As the British Empire's Ambassador, the Prince visited India on behalf of his father King George V, to thank the nation for the essential role it had played during the First World War. Moreover, the visit was intended to strengthen links between Britain and its Empire at a time of increasing calls for Indian independence. -
