The palace was built facing out towards the Bosphorus so that the Sultan and his visitors could arrive by boat. The River Gate is aligned with the main entrance into the grand Ceremonial Hall. The hall is lit by the world’s largest crystal chandelier, a gift to the Sultan from Queen Victoria. The photograph is signed and captioned in the negative, 'F Bedford Constantinople'.
