In 1862, only a few photographers had been granted permission to photograph the Dome of the Rock and the area immediately surrounding the shrine, known as the Haram al-Sharif. Bedford took every opportunity to photograph the site, knowing that images like these would be novel and exciting for audiences back in Britain. The photograph is signed, captioned and dated in the negative, 'F Bedford Jerusalem'. The number in the Day & Son series is 54.
