Photograph of the middle gateway (Nakamon) leading to the worship hall (Haiden) of the Bunshoin mausoleum of the sixth Tokugawa shōgun Ienobu (1662-1709). The structure consists of a single bay in width with a forward facing cusped gable roof (Karahafu) covered in copper-sheet tiling. A triangular gable gives visual emphasis to the roof behind. The flanking walls are decorated with carved relief panels, while the lanterns, which were donated by daimyō (regional Lords) and stand to the right of the entrance, are made of metal alloy (bronze).
