Table in the Renaissance style; of metal damascened with gold and silver with rectangular breadsided top inset with variegated marble, supported on pierced scrolled end panels carved with foliage and female and satyr heads. Ends rest on three pads, the centre ones linked by a cross-stretcher supporting corinthian columns below a coffered cornice. Designed in the manner of a sixteenth-century Spanish vargueño (cabinet) stand. The end panels incorporate the date 1880 and initials of the original owner, Alfred Morrison, whose celebrated collection was divided between 16 Carlton House Terrace and Fonthill House, Wiltshire. Some details of the design may have been influenced by Owen Jones, who was responsible for the interior decoration of both houses.
Provenance
Purchased by Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother for the Royal Collection on 1 February 1938 from Malletts; made for Alfred Morrison, probably for his house at 16 Carlton House Terrace, but later transferred to Fonthill House, Wiltshire, after the property in Carlton House Terrace was sold in the 1920s.
