Photograph of the huts of the Royal Artillery outside Sevastopol. At the base of the hill there is a settlement which includes a whitewashed building with a tiled roof, a row of wooden huts, a stable area and a yard with a number of artillery carriages. On the hillside behind there are a number of other buildings and tents. Near the top of the hill to the right there is a large group of horses grazing. The Siege of Sevastopol lasted eleven months, with the allied British, French and Turkish forces eventually capturing the city on the 8th September 1855. During the siege the troops engaged in the battle camped in the countryside surrounding the town.
