Photograph of the English batteries in front of Sevastopol. An earth wall reinforced with sandbags extends across the breadth of the scene. Cannons are spaced at intervals and there are piles of wood and ammunition behind. A number of soldiers are moving around the battery. Sevastopol can be seen in the distance to the right. The Siege of Sevastopol lasted eleven months, with the allied British, French and Turkish forces eventually capturing the city on the 8th September 1855.
