Photograph of the magazine in the Malakoff redoubt. In the foreground there is a series of trenches, their sides reinforced by wicker fences and sandbags. There is a flagpole and a small building on the low hill to the right. The French, led by Maréchal Pélissier, captured the Malakoff redoubt on the 8th September 1855. It had been one of the key Russian defences during the Siege of Sevastopol and its fall effectively ended the siege. The Russians abandoned the city that evening.
