Photograph of the landing place at the Ordnance Wharf in Balaklava. On the quayside there are piles of wood and ammunition, and a group of men are standing around a wooden cart. There is a large house to the left and several ships docked in the harbour to the right. The old Genoese Castle can just be seen on the hillside behind. Huge supplies of ammunition, or ordnance, were needed for the Siege of Sevastopol. The British received their supplies through the small port town of Balaklava.
